{Memento Dish} i try diy

Today's I TRY DIY is soooo easy, t's almost shameful of me to even consider posting it. But the truth is, I'm not here to share intricate and complicated projects that cost $1467295 dollars and take about 2 weeks to complete. I'm also not here to re-invent the wheel. One of this years most popular DIY trend is the look-how-simple-yet-witty-I-am Sharpie mug. Pinterest and Etsy are both flooded with ideas.

My slight spin on this popular DIY is a lot flatter and doesn't hold your caffeine, but still supa' cute: a Sharpie quote dish. Perfect for jewelry, loose coins, or fun mementos that make you smile. I decided on this inspirational quote to remind myself that even on the worst of days, there's always a silver lining.

What I used:

  • Sharpie Paint Pens (these are ideal for ceramic surfaces and hold up to soap and water WAY better than the regular ole' Sharpie marker)
  • Small dish (you can swap this out for a mug, or really any ceramic surface)
  • My oven

Sharpies are from Michaels. Oval dish is from Goodwill.

I initially wrote everything in the thinnest possible lines, then went over it to thicken up the letters and also add a second coat of paint. Make sure the paint is dry between coats.

Of course, I also added a neon pop. This pink paint pen is by DecoColor.

After the paint is fully dry, place the plate or mug into your oven before turning it on. Leave it in for 30 minutes at 425 F. After the 30 minutes, turn off the oven but leave the plate inside. It's tempting to take it out instantly, but its best to let it cool down slowly while still in the oven. I left mine in for a good 3-4 hours. (aka- don't start this project on a day you plan to make baked potatoes for dinner). After it's cool, remove from oven and enjoy your latest creation.
