Last Minute - Lazy Girl Cakes!
Hi my name is Laura and I don’t like baking.
It’s true. I said it. I will go to great measures to avoid baking. Frozen place-and-bake cookie dough is the ONLY dessert I’ve made in my oven over the past 3+ years. In my head, I saw myself baking yummy things all the time as a newly married woman - a real Suzy homemaker. But, the harsh reality is that… I don’t. HA!
So, wtf do I do when I’m in charge of the cake for an upcoming party, and want to make that ish look GOOD & fancy!? This life hack I’m calling the “lazy girl diy cake decor”
Step 1: order a grocery store bakery cake. My local grocery store is Publix. You can order your cake online in as short notice as just 24 hours in advance, they have tons of different flavors and fillings to choose from, and they give you the option to order a cake with absolutely NO decor - just a plain frosted canvas if you will.
Step 2: decorate the cake.
Step 3: impress everyone at the party.
It really is that simple and silly. It’s also really fun to gather all the goodies to top the cake with. So far, I have used this DIY cake decor method on three occasions, all totally different!
check Pinterest for inspo pics of cakes you want to imitate so that you’re not standing in the candy isle completely baffled and overwhelmed.
choose a theme or color palette.
decorate in clusters.
add decor to the base of the cake.
use straws to easily insert flowers. Just cut the straws into small pieces and tape one end closed.
sometimes less is more.
have fun with little personalized details.
This pretty pink floral design was for my best friends 30th birthday party
This white, yellow, and blue themed cake was for a wedding with a sunflower theme. I ended up simplifying the cake decor and using less flowers than expected, but we still used the leftover flowers in vases for decor :)
And lastly, this cake was for my husband’s birthday. My friends and I put this together in literally under 5 minutes. haha! We were several drinks deep so I’ll admit it’s not the “tidiest” cake LOL but we used all of his favorite chocolates and an upside down drumstick ice cream cone. Plus a little inside joke with the black tshirt decor ;) It was a hit!
I’m officially hooked on this method. It’s quick and takes all the stress out of baking for me. I love anything creative so this really is the fun part of being in charge of the cake for a party!
